

About the course
Grade 2 students will have access to oral and print texts with familiar topics and structures. Oral texts such as songs, poems, teacher read-alouds, large- and small-group discussions, and one-on-one conversations; print texts such as environmental print, simple fiction and non-fiction, and picture books, to motivate and engage diverse groups of students.

Topics:
Talking about day, date, month and year.
Describing one’s belongings (a bag, a mobile phone, etc)
Practising Communication used at the dinner table (propose a toast, give compliments, etc)
asking where somebody is from (country and city)
Asking for information about public transport (bus, tube, train.)
Ordering food in a restaurant (from entering a restaurant to paying the bill)
Time and location
Making enquiries when shopping about size, colour of clothes, looking for try room etc.
Grammar:
Emphasize Chinese sentence order: Time + Location + Action
Learn a large variety of sentence patterns
Emphasize on sentence patterns instead of grammar
Measure words
Past and future with time words
Question words
Chinese sentences with two words: Subject + verb1 + verb2
Possessive word ex. ‘de’
Expectations:
1. Listening to Understand
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
Listen in order to understand and respond appropriately in a variety of situations for a variety of purposes.
Practice lots of Pinyin and tones practice (reading and listening)
2. Speaking to Communicate
By the end of Grade 2 students will:
Use speaking skills to communicate in simple sentences.
Have basic conversations about themselves, family, life etc.
Improve intonation via practising drills and sentence patterns.
practise and memorise frequently used short daily life sentences and frequently used sentence patterns.
3. Reading
By the end of Grade 2 students will:
Read and understand simple to complex words in Mandarin.
Recognising simple characters (10-20 characters)
4. Writing:
By the end of Grade 2, students will:
Write simple to complex words in Mandarin.
Final Reporting
Assessment is the process of gathering information from a variety of sources, such as assignments, day-to-day observations, conversations or conferences, demonstrations, projects, and performances. As part of assessment, teachers provide students with descriptive feedback that guides their efforts towards improvement. The final grade reflects the student’s most consistent level of achievement throughout the course, although special consideration is given to more recent evidence of achievement. There is no final assessment, such as an exam, in this course.
